"The attorney named as President-elect Donald Trump's White House counsel, Donald McGahn, has been called "kryptonite to campaign finance reform," "a totally partisan politico," and "notorious for politicizing and crippling enforcement of federal campaign finance laws." Indeed, journalist Jon Schwarz wrote at The Intercept on Sunday that McGahn "bears as much responsibility as any single person for turning America's campaign finance system into something akin to a gigantic, clogged septic tank"."

Under Trump, Red States Are About to Become Low-Wage, Low Health Hell Holes

"Data compiled by the Pew Charitable Trust found that 10 states that receive less than a dollar back for every dollar they send to Washington: Delaware, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Connecticut, Illinois, Ohio, Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island. And here are the states that get more than $2 back for every $1 in taxes paid: Mississippi, New Mexico, West Virginia, Hawaii, South Carolina, Alabama, Maine, Montana, Alaska, Virginia, Arizona, Idaho, Kentucky and Vermont. You don’t have to be a political scientist to see the blue state/red state pattern here. Red state voters may talk a good game about small government and low taxes, but in reality they are socialist moochers."

Holy Conflict of Interest! The Firm Holding Much of Trump's Debt May Be Up for Sale.

http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/12/donald-trump-debt-sale-conflict-of-interest
"Trump owes hundreds of millions of dollars to a variety of lenders, giving his bankers a huge amount of potential leverage over the man who will soon occupy the most powerful office in the world. Already there are concerns about Trump's biggest lender, the troubled Deutsche Bank, which he owes at least $364 million. On Friday, Reuters reported that his second-biggest lender, a small Wall Street firm called Ladder Capital Strategies, may be putting itself up for sale to the highest bidder. Public records show Trump owes the firm at least $282 million, on four lines of credit. This means that other big money players—Wall Street firms, American banks, overseas banks, financial institutions partly owned by foreign governments—could move to buy up the debts of a US president and create a host of conflicts of interest."

Trump's Commerce Secretary Pick Led a Secret Wall Street Fraternity

http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/12/time-donald-trumps-new-commerce-secretary-led-wall-street-secret-society-dinner
"But Trump neglected to mention one of Ross' other credentials: He's connected to some of the world's most powerful investors and businessman via a secret Wall Street fraternity called Kappa Beta Phi. In January 2012, New York Times reporter Kevin Roose snuck into the society's annual black-tie induction ceremony, which was led by Ross, who at the time was the fraternity's "Grand Swipe." The fraternity, Roose wrote in his 2014 book, Young Money, was founded at the beginning of the Great Depression, and since then the induction ceremony had been subject to the utmost secrecy. The group's mantra, according to Roose, is "What happens at the St. Regis stays at the St. Regis." It's not hard to see why. At the 2012 event, Roose witnessed outlandish behavior by Ross and other financial tycoons that demonstrated vulgarity, greed, and a Wall Street callousness towards the non-wealthy masses. Some attendees made homophobic, racist, and sexist jabs about the likes of Hillary Clinton and former Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts. Others joked about the financial crisis. One even wore a confederate flag hat. And when Roose was outed as a reporter partway through the night, Ross himself took Roose into the St. Regis hotel's lobby and tried to convince him not to print the story by offering himself up as an "anytime" source for Roose's future reporting. While leading the event, Ross wore purple velvet moccasins embroidered with the fraternity's Greek letters. The group's name is an inversion of the college honor society Phi Beta Kappa, whose ruffled-sleeve logo, Ross said on the ballroom stage, is a "tacit confession of homosexuality." The main event of the night was the induction of 21 "neophytes" into the fraternity."

"Donald Trump lost the vote for president by well over two-and-a-half million votes and counting, and it's driving him out of his mind. Because our odd electoral system gives more weight to voters in small, rural, mostly white states, the loser of this year's popular vote will take the oath of office on January 20th."

Trump Has a Huge Foreign Bank Problem

http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/12/trump-deutsche-bank-conflict-loans
"That concern exists with Trump, but he presents a unique problem when it comes to conflicts of interest: He and his companies have borrowed hundreds of millions of dollars. These are loans that potentially afford his lenders leverage over Trump. This creates the possibility that Trump may find himself in the position of choosing between US interests and his lenders' interests. There's no better example of this than the $364 million Trump owes the struggling Deutsche Bank, which is staggering under fierce pressure from US financial regulators who want the bank to pay for its misdeeds during the run-up to the 2008 mortgage crisis. (Trump is in a real estate partnership that borrowed $950 million from a group of banks including a subsidiary of Deutsche Bank and the state-owned Bank of China.) As it has hit trouble, Deutsche Bank's stock has fallen in the past year to levels so dangerously low that the German government was reported to be considering stepping in to prop up the bank. But on January 20, the newly inaugurated President Trump will have the ability to remove all that pressure on one of his most loyal creditors."

"America just witnessed its least democratic election since Southern black voters effectively gained the ability to vote in 1965. Hillary Clinton’s lead over Donald Trump now exceeds two-and-a-half million votes. It is likely that, when the final results are certified, Clinton will defeat Trump by more than two percentage points. Still, Trump will move into the White House in January. It’s hardly the first time something like this happened in recent years. In 2012, Democratic House candidates won nearly 1.4 million more votes than their Republican counterparts. Yet Republicans won more than 30 seats more than Democrats in the House of Representatives, thanks to congressional districts that advantage the GOP. Remember that government shutdown in 2013? It wouldn’t have happened if the Democratic majority that Americans voted for a year earlier had actually taken control of the House."

Warning: This Trump Hire Is Hazardous to Your Health (And Not Just Your Medicare) @alternet:
"Donald Trump’s latest cabinet pick endangers the health and well-being of millions of Americans. From tax cuts to surgeons’ income, Rep. Tom Price of Georgia — Trump’s choice to run the Department of Health and Human Services — has repeatedly fought for the wealthy and privileged at the expense of ordinary Americans. As a trained physician, Price is supposedly bound by the Hippocratic oath: “First, do no harm.” Unfortunately, he’ll soon be in a position to do a great deal of harm — and his widely publicized desire to gut Medicare is only part of the problem."

The gold-leaf presidency

https://thinkprogress.org/the-gold-leaf-presidency-be5f0a60ff0#.hxgcr7g4d
"But the truth about Donald Trump is that the image he projects outwardly—of opulence, success, grandiosity—immediately begins to erode if you afford him anything more than a passing glance. His buildings are falling apart and his line of clothing is made overseas. He has no interest in making things to the highest standards so long as he can just pretend to and still charge a premium. If Donald Trump were a house, he would be a McMansion, complete with fake marble columns, cheap fixtures and a mold infestation hidden underneath a fresh coat of paint. Trump is hardly the first businessman to profit from selling a bill of goods. Of greater concern is the fact we are now seeing Trump’s business principles applied to his role as an elected official. For every problem that has arisen during his transition, Trump has reached for whatever cosmetic solution was within his immediate grasp. Crises both foreign and domestic demand nuance and deliberation, but that takes more effort than Trump is willing to provide."

Donald Trump, With 46 Percent of the Vote, Is the First Sore Loser to Be Elected President

https://theintercept.com/2016/11/28/donald-trump-first-sore-loser-elected-president-united-states/
"at a moment when he mistakenly thought Barack Obama had received fewer votes than Mitt Romney but had won reelection through the Electoral College — Donald Trump revealed a few things that we need to recognize right now. First, that this is a man who is easily confused or misled by the news he consumes from television or the internet. What Trump was referring to in his tweet, posted shortly after the polls closed on the West Coast, was the fact that Obama had been declared the winner by the news networks as soon as he was projected to secure a majority of the electoral votes by winning Ohio. At that moment, before almost any votes had been counted in California, Trump was baffled and outraged by the numbers he saw on the screen, which showed that Romney was then nearly a million votes ahead of Obama in the national popular vote count. “He lost the popular vote by a lot and won the election,” Trump wrote at the start of a Twitter tirade against “the phoney [sic] electoral college,” he would later delete. Not long after Trump’s Twitter eruption began, Obama pulled ahead in the popular-vote metric too, and he would go on to win a majority of the popular vote, defeating Romney by nearly five million votes, 51.1 percent to 47.2 percent. Beyond impetuousness, an inability to proof-read, and a shaky grasp of how elections work, what Trump’s tweet from four years ago reveals most clearly is that he thinks one word describes a presidential candidate who gets fewer votes than his rival: loser. With that in mind, it is not hard to understand Trump’s increasingly desperate attempts to spin his legally insignificant but politically embarrassing status as a president-elect who got 2.3 million less votes than his opponent, Hillary Clinton. The fact that Trump managed to get just 46.4 percent of the vote, securing a smaller share than Clinton (48.2 percent), as well as Romney — whom he had mocked for losing to Obama — clearly disturbs him, since he continues to bring it up, and make excuses."

Bernie Sanders: Corporations Just Learned How to Flip Donald Trump on His Back @alternet:
"In essence, United Technologies took Trump hostage and won. And that should send a shock wave of fear through all workers across the country. Trump has endangered the jobs of workers who were previously safe in the United States. Why? Because he has signaled to every corporation in America that they can threaten to offshore jobs in exchange for business-friendly tax benefits and incentives. Even corporations that weren’t thinking of offshoring jobs will most probably be re-evaluating their stance this morning. And who would pay for the high cost for tax cuts that go to the richest businessmen in America? The working class of America. Let’s be clear. United Technologies is not going broke. Last year, it made a profit of $7.6 billion and received more than $6 billion in defense contracts. It has also received more than $50 million from the Export-Import Bank and very generous tax breaks. In 2014, United Technologies gave its former chief executive Louis Chenevert a golden parachute worth more than $172 million. Last year, the company’s five highest-paid executives made more than $50 million. The firm also spent $12 billion to inflate its stock price instead of using that money to invest in new plants and workers. Does that sound like a company that deserves more corporate welfare from our government? Trump’s Band-Aid solution is only making the problem of wealth inequality in America even worse."

"1. He’s all about reciprocal love. In the campaign, Trump often played on fear and hate. He targeted Muslims, refugees, undocumented immigrants, and any other scapegoat that served his interests. But deep down, what he wanted was the love of his adoring crowds. Emotionally, he’s a child. He can love others, but only if they love him first. And that’s how he sees his presidency. In his interview with the Times on Nov. 22, he explained that his job is “taking care of the people that really have proven to be—to love Donald Trump"."
